About Me

I was expelled from Montessori school in the fifth grade…

… for refusing to do anything but draw all day, every day. I studied fine arts in college with a concentration in photography. Following a brief sojourn in museum education I fell into graphic design through an internship at AFTERIMAGE, the publication of the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY.

Since then I’ve worked in book publishing, museum exhibit design, advertising, jewelry design, fine art painting, and photography. As the art director of Front Street/Boyds Mills Press, I designed and produced award-winning children’s picture books, young adult novels, poetry, and nonfiction titles. I have received design awards from the Creative Quarterly, the New York Book Show, the Connecticut Center for the Book, the Asheville Art Directors Club, and the Boston Art Directors Club.

I currently operate Helen Robinson Design. I grew up in Athens, Greece, and live in Asheville, North Carolina.

In “regular" school where not only did I have to wear this hideous  uniform, but was encouraged to hold my pencil in my “right” hand.
